Released in 1931 following the success of Dracula, Frankenstein was the Star Wars of its day, and made a star of Boris Karloff.

Dr. Henry Frankenstein has become obsessed with creating life.  He and his assistant Fritz begin to rob graves in order to obtain raw materials to build his creation.

Frankenstein sends Fritz to steal a brain from the lab of Dr. Waldman, his old professor.  Unfortunately Fritz screws up and brings back the brain of Abby Someone.  Fortunately for fans, this provides a plot line for many sequels.

Back at the lab, Dr. Frankenstein has completed assembly, and begins the process to bring his creation to life.

"It's alive! It's alive! It's alive!"  Victor and Dr. Waldman restrain Dr. Frankenstein as he proclaims "In the name of God now I know how feels to be God!"  That line was censored for many years as it was considered sacrilege, but it was finally restored in the DVD version of the film.  Hurray for History!

In this scene we see the monster for the first time.  Director James Whale chose the relatively unknown Boris Karloff to play the monster because he liked the bone structure of his face.   The opening credits of the movie show "?" as the monster.  Karloff's portrayal launched him as a star and solidified Universal's hold on the horror picture franchise.

Fritz torments the monster relentlessly, which proves to be his undoing when he gets just a little to close.

The monster finds a friend in little Maria.  Unfortunately for her, the monster has no inhibitions and does what many actors would like to do with child actors and pitches her into the lake.  That scene was also edited from the movie for many years, but it's back in the DVD.  Hurray for History!

Frankenstein believes that Dr. Waldman has destroyed the monster, but the opposite is true.  It is Henry and Elizabeth's wedding day, and they have an uninvited guest.

Frankenstein leads a party of town's folk to find the monster.  Fortunately he does find him.  Unfortunately he has become seperated from the search party and a confrontation ensues.

mill1.jpg

The monster carries Frankenstein to the old mill, but the town's folk have caught his trail and follow him there.  Here the monster shows his displeasure with Frankenstein and tosses him from the top of the mill.

The mob sets fire to the mill and the monster meets the first of many "endings".
